When I picked a specialty, I felt very comfortable with my choice — it was an informed decision based on my years working across multiple areas and being exposed to a variety of practice groups.

Handle Meaningful Work

True to our entrepreneurial spirit, we welcome your enthusiasm to work on a range of matters, from groundbreaking global deals to high-stakes complex commercial litigation. You will quickly contribute to client work, with the ability to seek out various opportunities based on your practice preferences or interest in a particular matter.

I had to dive right in and handle increased responsibilities on a deal, including working very closely with the company’s general counsel.

Develop Your Strengths

As you progress as a lawyer, take advantage of our exceptional suite of training and professional development programs.

Join your peers from across the firm at our signature multi-day training academies at key points in your career, to build — face-to-face — the relationships and networks you will need to succeed. Improve your legal and business skills through our Core Curriculum and learn the “nuts and bolts” of key Latham practices.

And learn from the best as you develop with the support of your mentor, a more senior lawyer chosen for you (based on your preferences) to help guide your career.

What my mentor and I have in common is the somewhat unusual experience of navigating Latham life with small children and a working spouse. The fact that I was able to request and receive a mentor with experience in this often confusing and demanding situation has been invaluable.

Associate, Orange County

Maximize Your Knowledge

Cultivate your interests and hone your skills with our world-class training programs:

  • Summer Academy
  • First Year Academy
  • Third Year Academy
  • Fifth Year Academy
  • Diversity Leadership Academy
  • Women’s Leadership Academy
  • Deposition Training Program
  • Trial Advocacy Program
  • M&A Academy
  • Global Mentoring Program
I learned a tremendous amount about the firm — the business model, the global platform and very transparently about the firm’s finances. I also forged lasting friendships at Summer Academy. I’m fully aware that sounds ridiculous and campy. But the academies are quintessentially Latham.

Participate in Candid Evaluations

You are entitled to open, transparent and honest communication so you can take ownership of your career development. Our unique associate review program provides specific feedback — twice a year — in an in-depth, in-person conference, where you will be read your supervisor reviews, word-for-word. You will receive a clear message about your standing in the firm so you can take ownership over your career development. You will also review your supervisors through confidential yearly evaluations.

Take Your Career Further

We only hire lawyers with the potential to become a partner. Associates are considered for a partner or counsel promotion after eight years of practice.

If you ultimately choose to take your career in a different direction, you will still be a valued part of our community. Our In-House Career Initiative can provide you with resources, contacts, and promising new opportunities at clients and other employers. You will also benefit from our close relationships with former Latham lawyers through our global Alumni Network. As a true testament to the reach of the Latham community, lawyers who leave the firm frequently become clients, or circle back into other roles at the firm later in their careers.
